Make sure the USB or USB-C cable is properly connected to your camera and the computer. If your computer has another USB port, try plugging the cable into it. Check your camera to make sure it’s turned on and set to the correct mode for importing photos. See the instructions provided with your camera. Check your camera’s memory card for damage. Mac Computer USB Camera Software for Mac Users (other than Photo Booth and FaceTime) The easy and direct software is the built-in app 'Photo Booth' 1. Since our microscopes use a standard webcam chipset, they will automatically install default webcam (UVC) drivers when plugged in to a host device. They can be used with any webcam app, including the ones built-in to most operating systems.
Some features of our microscopes aren’t available in some webcam applications. We designed our USB microscope software package, Plugable Digital Viewer, specifically for use with our microscopes. This enables features such as resolution switching, video processing amplifier control, and the capture button to be utilized.
Setup Instructions
Look for the in-app Video settings, then change the video source from your built-in camera to EpocCam. Contact the app developer if you can’t find the video settings. You should see a live feed from your iPhone camera on your Mac or PC, offering much higher-quality video than your built-in webcam. The PTZOptics camera control application is a free software-based camera control for PTZOptics cameras. The software can control pan, tilt, zoom cameras connected via IP and USB to provide maximum flexbility for video productions.
This opens the Camera app, which will automatically open your webcam. If you can see your webcam's image, it is working properly. If it’s your first time using the Camera app, you may have to grant permission for the app to run.

Plugable Digital Viewer is designed specifically to work with the microscope. This package works with the following Windows releases (Windows 10 S mode and Windows RT not supported).
- Windows 10
- Windows 8/8.1
- Windows 7
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP SP3
Note: Windows versions 8, 8.1, 10, and 10 in S Mode include a built-in camera application that works well with the microscope.
Allow apps from unidentified developers on macos 10.14. Open a Mac app from an unidentified developer. If you try to open an app that isn’t registered with Apple by an identified developer, you get a warning dialog. This doesn’t necessarily mean that something’s wrong with the app. For example, some apps were written before developer ID registration began. Open Finder and find the app you want to install. Next, press the Control key and click. But there is a third, hidden option: 'Allow apps from anywhere'. This used to be an option in earlier versions of macOS, but disappeared when macOS Sierra arrived.
Mac
Plugable Digital Viewer is available for macOS/Mac OS X. There are two different versions depending on what OS version you are running.
macOS 10.13.4 and above
Mac OS X 10.5.x to macOS 10.13.3
Note: The built-in Photo Booth application works well with the microscope, though images are mirrored left-to-right.
Chrome OS
Our microscopes can be used with the default Camera app that comes with Chrome. Google provides an excellent usage guide, linked below.
In the Camera app, you may need to select the ‘Switch Camera’ button next to the red ‘Capture’ button. Some Chrome machines with built-in cameras may need to have the device pointer changed. This can be done by going to Settings > Advanced Settings > Privacy > Content Settings > Camera, and change the device in the dropdown to “USB Microscope”.
Linux
We have tested our microscope with many Linux distros utilizing either the Cheese app or GTK+ UVC Viewer. These can either be installed by searching by app name through the app store in your Linux distro (if available), or by using the following terminal commands.

Using the microscope on an Android device requires an OTG cable. We recommend the app CameraFi 2, available on Google Play.
Note: Android support is on a case-by-case basis. Device manufacturers must have support for USB Video Class devices built-in or this will not work.
iOS
iOS is not supported. iOS hosts specifically do not work with standard external USB Video Class devices.
Apple is always working on improving your security, and each macOS update brings new privacy features. In particular, macOS Catalina offers better control of your data. It requires apps to get your approval before accessing the camera and microphone on your Mac. Every time you open the application for the first time, you’ll need to permit it to use your computer’s camera.
Below we’ll show you how to give camera access for any installed app. Also, you’ll learn how to limit access for programs you suspect might be recording videos without your knowledge. Let’s dive in!
Securing your camera and microphone
By default, the latest macOS versions — macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina — prevent apps from getting your personal data without your permission. That’s why when you open the program that wants to access your hardware, you’ll receive a pop-up. To give access, you just have to click OK. If this is a reliable app from a legitimate developer, you’ll need to confirm once and never think about it again.
If you clicked “Don’t Allow,” you could easily change that later on your Mac. You can check what apps are allowed to use your camera and allow or block access at any time. And here’s how to do that.
How to manage your camera permissions
Now let’s see a few ways that allow the apps to access your camera. If you’re looking for a simple automated solution, jump straight to the last method.
#1: Use System Preferences
Follow these steps to give some apps access to your camera:
- Go to the Apple menu.
- Choose System Preferences.
- Click Security & Privacy.
- Choose Camera from the lefthand menu.
- Allow the app to access your camera by ticking the box next to it.
If the application is opened on your Mac, you’ll receive a message asking you to quit it.
Click “Quit Now” and close the System Preferences window. Run mac app from terminal.
#2: Use your web browser
Let’s see how to enable camera permissions via Google Chrome.
- Open Chrome.
- Go to the Chrome menu > Preferences.
- Choose Advanced > Privacy & Security.
- Under Privacy and security, click Site Settings.
- Choose Camera.
- Click Ask before accessing and adjust the setting to your liking.
The process is similar for all web browsers, so if you’re using Safari or Firefox, you shouldn’t have problems with finding camera permissions settings.
#3: Use Parental Controls
The parental control feature on Mac also allows you to manage your camera.
- Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
- Choose Parental Controls.
- Click Enable Parental Controls.
- Enter your admin password if you’re asked.
- Click on the Apps tab and check Allow use of camera.
Mac Usb Camera Software
If you want to block camera access, uncheck the box. This will prevent all the apps on your Mac from using the built-in cameras.
#4: Use the app CleanMyMac X
We’ve come to the smoothest and the most intuitive way of taking care of your app permissions — with the help of an app called CleanMyMac X.
This program has a lot of useful features, like cleaning your Mac from junk files, speeding up the system, checking your computer for viruses and malware, and much more. Recently a new feature “Application Permissions” was released, and it allows controlling all your permissions, including your camera, in a few clicks. You should check it out!
- Download CleanMyMac X (a free trial version is available).
- Launch the app.
- Go to the Privacy tab.
- Click Scan.
- Choose “Application Permissions.”
- Check what apps have access to your camera and make changes.
Note: This feature is available only on macOS Catalina.

Once you’ve solved the issue with your permissions, check out other CleanMyMac’s tools. We recommend you to run a Smart Scan first. It will find unneeded files, determine potential threats, and define suitable speedup tasks for your Mac.
Then feel free to try other tools in the left panel —you’ll find a lot of useful tools for making your Mac as good as new.
